Traction Gas Struts
A traction gas strut operates in a pulling motion, as opposed to a standard (compression) gas strut, which pushes. The rod is in its relaxed position when it is inside the body. Once opening the application, the strut will adjust up to 90% of its extended length for recommended usage. The cylinder acts to pull the rod back in through a controlled movement. The force resists against the open application, attempting to revert it back to its original closed position. Therefore, these struts are ideal for use on applications that open with gravity and require a force to close it - such as a loft hatch or a horse trailer door.
As a gas strut manufacturer, we offer stock and custom traction gas struts, so you can be sure you have the perfect solution for your application.

Temperature range:
The working temperature range is -30°c to +80°c.
Mounting orientations:
The gas strut’s rod needs to be facing down in the position it is going to be in for the majority of the time (resting position).
Longevity:
We provide 8mm dust covers for 22mm body traction gas struts in order to prevent any ingress of contaminants from getting into the seal and reducing longevity.
Materials available:
In addition to our regular steel traction gas struts, we also offer stainless steel gas struts, made from stainless steel 316. Stainless steel 316 is an excellent option for avoiding corrosion.
They can be customised to withstand harsh environmental conditions.
Applications:
Some applications a traction gas strut may be used for include loft doors, trailer doors (making them suitable for the horsebox industry), access ramps and gates. They are often found in the agricultural, automotive, and manufacturing industries.
Benefits:
Traction gas struts have an advantage over tension springs as they can provide a much greater force in a more compact design with minimal noise. You wouldn’t be able to achieve this force with a tension spring of the same size.
Another benefit of traction gas struts is their ability to perform thousands of cycles, whilst being maintenance-free and having easy installation.
Guarantee:
We offer a 2-year guarantee under normal usage.
FAQ’s:
How do I calculate the required pull force for my application?
The best way to determine the correct force rating is by using our free online design service. Another method is to weigh the application and use the calculation that approximately 10kg requires 100 newtons of force.
Can traction struts be mounted vertically?
Yes, with the rod facing downwards.
Do traction struts require lubrication?
No, if you install your strut with the rod facing downwards, it will stay lubricated, and no maintenance will be required.
What end fittings are compatible with traction gas struts?
If you require end fittings with your traction gas strut, you can purchase these through the drop-down feature on the product page. This tool will only offer compatible end fittings and brackets.
How do I install traction gas struts?
Traction gas struts are generally installed compressed as this is their resting state. However, we can supply rod spacers which hold the traction strut open so that it can be installed at a certain length. These rod spacers open the strut up by 75mm. This is suitable if the application area is too big for the strut and the connective points cannot be reduced. Please see our installation guide for more information. Check out our detailed guide for more complex installations.
What other gas struts can I order from Metrol?
At Metrol, we also sell fixed force gas struts, standard adjustable gas struts, stainless steel gas struts, mechanical locking gas struts and pin locking gas struts.
