Torsion Springs
Metrol manufactures a wide range of torsion springs, with single coil and double coil springs available. As members of the Lesjofors Group, we have access to the world's leading spring manufacturers, and we will provide you with the exact spring designs you need regardless of the application.
Torsion springs are one of the many wire spring designs that we manufacture for a diverse range of applications, from clothes pegs and car tailgates to vehicle components and industrial machinery.

What are Torsion Springs?
They work by storing mechanical energy when the end of the coil is rotated around the spring axis, allowing the cylindrical wound torsion springs to exert a rotational force. Typically, the inside body diameter is mounted on a shaft, with some play between the inner diameter and the shaft for single torsion springs.
Torque is equal to force multiplied by leg length (MT=F x LL), and interestingly, standard torsion springs have a linear characteristic. This means that if, for example, a spring is deflected by 10°, which provides a torque of 1Nmm, 2Nmm would be exhibited at an angle of 20° spring deflection.
Best Practices When Using Torsion Springs from Metrol
We recommend that the load is applied to the torsion springs so the torque application binds the spring. This is because the spring is strongest in this direction. Additionally, fixed tension ends are always recommended, as they can minimise friction against the shaft. It is also worth bearing in mind that the closer the load is to the end of the torsion spring leg length, the less counterforce is created due to the increased momentum from the longer axis attachment point. If you use the maximum specified torque angle in your application, 10,000 load cycles are the maximum permitted. At 80% of the permitted torque angle, the lifespan increases to 200,000-400,000 load oscillations, and at 70%, the lifespan is almost infinite.
We Offer a Wide Range of Torsion Springs
Browse each category in our wire springs interface to view single- and double-ended springs. You can select your desired wire diameter, internal diameter, and leg position, where TC means 'number of sprung coils' and R means 'Spring Rate, Nmm per degree'). Our standard springs have straight ends and are manufactured from stainless steel.
As torsion spring manufacturers and international suppliers, we also offer a bespoke design service for made-to-order custom torsion springs here. Torsion Spring Applications
As a torsion spring manufacturer, we have seen torsion springs find versatile applications across various industries, providing crucial functionality in a wide range of mechanical systems; here are some examples of non-standard designs and how our products are used:
- Heavy-Duty Torsion Springs: Designed to withstand substantial loads and torque, these springs are commonly employed in applications where a robust and durable solution is required, such as industrial machinery, agricultural equipment, and heavy construction equipment.
- Large Torsion Springs: Characterised by their significant size and high torque capacity, large torsion springs are frequently utilised in applications where a substantial amount of force needs to be stored and released, such as garage doors, loading dock ramps, and various automotive components. The design considerations for large torsion springs involve balancing the size and weight of the spring with the specific torque requirements of the application.
- Flat Torsion Springs: Also known as spiral torsion springs or clock springs, they have a unique design with a flat, spiral-shaped configuration. These springs are often used for efficient energy storage and release in applications where space constraints and a compact design are critical, like clock mechanisms or automotive steering systems.
